Perfectstroke Green Reading System
The Perfectstroke Green Reading System represents one of the most advanced and comprehensive approaches to green reading ever developed. Combining proven mathematics with cutting-edge ball tracking data, Perfectstroke provides golfers with precise, easy-to-use aiming solutions for virtually any putting scenario.
At the heart of the system is a series of expertly engineered charts that identify the correct aiming line based on combinations of side slope, up slope, down slope, and green speed. The calculations behind the system are derived from the Science and Motion Sports Ball Tracking System, enabling highly accurate aim recommendations for greens ranging from 8 to 14 on the Stimpmeter.
Unlike traditional green-reading methods that rely heavily on feel and guesswork, Perfectstroke delivers measurable, repeatable guidance. A key advantage of the system is that the recommended aim, expressed in degrees, remains consistent regardless of putt length, provided the average slope conditions can be accurately assessed. This gives golfers a simple and reliable framework for reading greens with greater confidence and consistency.
Green Reading Charts
Perfectstroke Green Reading Charts are available individually or as a complete set of three, covering the most common green speed categories:
- Medium Greens – Stimp 8–9
- Fast Greens – Stimp 10–11
- Tour Fast Greens – Stimp 12–13
Each chart is paired with a dedicated Perfectstroke Ball Marker specifically calibrated for its corresponding green speed range.
For golfers seeking the ultimate green-reading toolkit, the Complete Perfectstroke Green Reading Set includes all three chart and marker combinations, along with the comprehensive Perfectstroke Green Reading Manual.
Perfectstroke Ball Markers
The Perfectstroke Ball Markers transform sophisticated mathematical calculations into a practical on-course reference that can be used in seconds.
Rather than requiring players to interpret aiming angles, the markers convert the recommended aim in degrees into a simple and intuitive reference known as the “Plays Like Aim.” This unique system allows golfers to quickly determine the correct starting line based on the slope and speed of the green.
Three marker versions are available:
- Medium Greens (Stimp 8–9)
- Fast Greens (Stimp 10–11)
- Tour Fast Greens (Stimp 12–13)
Each marker is precision-calibrated to deliver accurate aiming references for its specific green speed category.
Dual-Sided Design for Every Putting Situation
Every Perfectstroke Ball Marker features a dual-sided design to cover the full range of putting conditions.
One side provides aiming references for putts requiring a “Plays Like Aim” of up to 4.0, while the reverse side covers more severe slope combinations where side slope, down slope, and green speed can create significantly larger breaks.
For example, on an 11 Stimp green, a putt with a 2.5% side slope and a 3.0% down slope requires an aiming line of almost 22 degrees from the centre of the hole. Using the Perfectstroke system, this translates into a simple Plays Like Aim of 6.2, making a complex calculation easy to understand and execute.
The Power of the Plays Like Aim System
The Plays Like Aim concept is the foundation of the Perfectstroke methodology.
All Perfectstroke charts and markers convert precise aiming angles into practical reference values that golfers can quickly recognise and apply during play.
For instance, on a green running at 10.5 Stimp, a putt struck from 4 feet, 10 feet, or even 30 feet with a consistent 2.0% side slope requires approximately the same starting direction—about 7 degrees from the centre of the hole. Perfectstroke simplifies this information into an easy-to-use aiming reference, allowing golfers to focus on execution rather than calculation.
Similarly, a putt featuring a 2.0% side slope combined with a 1.0% down slope will effectively play like a 2.5% aim, while also requiring consideration for the increased speed created by the downhill grade.
Read Greens with Confidence
Whether you’re a competitive amateur, club golfer, coach, or elite player, Perfectstroke provides a scientific, repeatable, and highly accurate method for reading greens. By transforming complex slope and speed calculations into simple aiming references, the system removes uncertainty and helps golfers make more confident putting decisions.
Perfectstroke isn’t just another green-reading aid—it’s a complete green-reading system designed to help golfers unlock their full putting potential and perform with greater consistency on every green.

When the Premium Bundle is purchased you get the Green Reading Manual, the three ball markers which are for Medium Speed Greens (Blue), Fast Greens (Yellow), and Tour Fast Greens (Red), as well as extra standard charts which are double laminated.
Understanding Green Slope and Putt Break
The primary factor that causes a golf ball to break during a putt is side slope. However, the amount of up slope or down slope present also plays a critical role in determining the total amount of break.
Putts played on a combination of side slope and down slope will break significantly more than putts with side slope alone, as the downhill gradient allows gravity to influence the ball for a longer period. Conversely, putts that combine side slope with up slope will break considerably less, as the uphill gradient slows the ball and reduces the effect of the side slope.
Measuring Slope
Slope is measured as a percentage using the principle of rise over run—the vertical change between two points divided by the horizontal distance between them. Direction, on the other hand, is measured in degrees.
In practical putting terms:
- 1.0% slope – Almost flat or barely perceptible
- 2.0% slope – Slight slope
- 3.0% slope – Steep slope
- 4.0% slope – Severe slope
When discussing direction, a difference of just 1 degree can be significant. From a distance of 10 feet (3 metres), 1 degree represents approximately the distance between the centre of the hole and its edge. This highlights the importance of precise green reading and accurate aim selection.
Building Elite Green-Reading Skills
When golfers use the Perfectstroke Green Reading Charts and Ball Markers in training mode—whether on a practice green or during social rounds—they develop a deeper understanding of how slope, green speed, and direction influence ball movement.
Through repeated use, players gain valuable experience in recognising slope percentages, understanding how different slope combinations affect break, and selecting the correct aim. This knowledge can then be applied instinctively during competitive play, helping golfers make more confident and informed putting decisions.
Competition Use
The three Perfectstroke Green Reading Charts and corresponding Ball Markers are designed as powerful training and learning tools and are not permitted for use during competition under the Rules of Golf.
To assist players in transferring their training to tournament play, Perfectstroke provides a Line-Only Ball Marker that may be used during competition. In addition, a Rules of Golf conforming version of the Perfectstroke Green Reading Chart—available in each of the three green-speed ranges—is included with the purchase of the Perfectstroke Green Reading Manual.
Together, these tools provide a complete pathway from learning and skill development to confident on-course performance, allowing golfers to transform complex green-reading concepts into practical, repeatable results.
