Perfectstroke Green Gauge Golf Training System
The Perfectstroke Green Gauge Golf Training System is a precision training aid designed to accurately measure the Stimp speed of a golf green while providing valuable feedback on ball roll and putting performance.
Using a consistent and repeatable ball release, the Green Gauge enables golfers, coaches, and greenkeepers to accurately assess green speed and better understand how putts behave on different slopes and surfaces. It clearly demonstrates the amount of break on sloping putts and helps identify the true starting line required for successful putting.
When used on a practice putting green, the Perfectstroke Green Gauge allows players to:
- Accurately measure green speed (Stimp).
- Identify a perfectly straight putt (Zero Break Line).
- Visualise how much putts break on varying slopes.
- Develop consistent green-reading skills.
- Improve putting alignment and start-line accuracy.
Compact and lightweight, the Green Gauge easily fits into a golf bag or suitcase, making it ideal for tournament players, coaches, and travelling professionals.
Integrated Laser Calibration System
The Perfectstroke Green Gauge includes a removable laser calibration system that projects a precise laser line along the intended putting path.
The laser can be used to:
- Identify and verify the correct starting line.
- Find a true straight putt (Zero Break Line).
- Check putter face alignment at address by using the supplied dedicate cradle
- Calibrate the alignment of a putting mirror.
- Calibrate a SAM PuttLab PuttStation in an indoor environment.
Operating Instructions
Measuring Green Speed (Stimp)
- Attach the magnetic back plate to the rear base of the Green Gauge.
- Position the Green Gauge on a reasonably level section of the putting green.
- Place a golf ball in the groove at the 300 mm mark.
- Gently release the ball without adding any extra force.
- Repeat with two additional balls.
- Measure the distance each ball travels from the front of the Green Gauge and calculate the average roll distance.
- Move the Green Gauge to the point where the balls came to rest and repeat the test in the opposite direction.
- Calculate the average distance for the second set of rolls.
- Add the two average distances together and divide by two. The result is the green’s Stimp speed, expressed in feet and inches.
Example:
- Average roll = 10 feet 6 inches
- Stimp reading = 10.5
Measuring in both directions helps compensate for subtle slopes and provides a more accurate reading.
Finding a Straight Putt (Zero Break Line)
- Attach the magnetic back plate to the rear of the Green Gauge.
- Insert the laser module horizontally into the rear of the housing until it clicks into position.
- Turn on the laser.
- Position the Green Gauge where you believe the putt is straight.
- Release several balls using the Green Gauge.
Observe the relationship between the laser dot and the rolling ball:
- If the laser dot remains centred on the ball throughout its roll, you have identified a true straight putt (Zero Break Line).
- If the ball rolls to the left of the laser line, move the Green Gauge slightly left and repeat.
- If the ball rolls to the right of the laser line, move the Green Gauge slightly right and repeat.
Continue making small adjustments until the laser dot remains on the ball for the entire roll.
Estimating Break on Sloping Putts
Once a Zero Break Line has been established, the Green Gauge can be used to determine the correct starting line for breaking putts.
Using repeated ball releases from different positions on the ramp, observe how the ball curves toward the hole.
For example:
- A 6-foot putt
- On a 10 Stimp green
- With a 3 o’clock side slope
may require the ball to be released from approximately 100–150 mm on the Green Gauge to produce the correct break.
Once the optimal release position has been identified:
- Position the bullseye target adjacent to the hole with the red dot on the centre of the target.
- Mark the point to putt from and then remove the Green Gauge.
- Practise putting along the established starting line while focusing on consistent speed and face alignment.
This process allows golfers to repeatedly train the correct starting line and speed for breaking putts, improving green reading, confidence, and overall putting performance.
